The project
In the heart of Sydney’s west is one of Australia’s earliest sites of convict settlement.
The Parramatta Female Factory Precinct predates Port Arthur, yet it remains relatively obscure.
It is a place of significant importance in the history and culture of Australia, particularly for women. Located in Fleet St North Parramatta the precinct extends across the government owned sites of Cumberland Hospital, Norma Parker Detention Centre and DoCs State Disaster Recovery Unit.
We seek the designation of this first site of female convict settlement as the ideal location for the establishment of a National Women’s Heritage Centre, as a Living Memorial to Women, the Forgotten Australians, Child Migrants and the Stolen Generations.
