The damage done by a missing apostrophe

Driving through Nowra (NSW south coast) on Saturday morning I saw this sign "Were No 1". I'm sure the owner of this establisment meant "We're No 1", which sounds much more like something you might advertise.
It also reminded me of one of the best along these lines which I saw on a 'night soil' truck many years ago on the Spit bridge in Sydney - "We're No 1 in the No 2 business".
