While Labor is desparately keen to portray itself as the party of the future, it is still sending out mixed signals on some key issues. Rudd said he would be an activist, pro-manufacturing PM but Wayne Swan was just as keen to reassure business observers that the party would not divert from a market-based approach. Similarly, Rudd tells the party that he will throw out WorkChoices and replace it with something that, looks to business anyway, as a return to the days of black and white TV, a place Rudd claims Howard is stuck in.
