"We are a party of smaller government, lower taxation, supporting families and free enterprise."

How does this line up with the intervention, GST and Workchoices (I'll give him being in the pocket of big business).

Trevor, the stuff about Fusion is all very well but more recently the Coalition ruled themselves out of government by trying to abolish Medicare. Only where Medicare ceased to be a problem for them over 1993-96 did they become a credible prospective government, as I've said elsewhere. It's the more useful parallel in understanding what's going on now.

My guess is the Libs will get their act together sooner than you might imagine, they're not going to go crazy like Evatt or wallow like Calwell.

Bob Meade

I really wonder what the Nationals are making of all these goings on with the Libs. And what plans they may be making to capitalise. I think you are suggesting that they may benefit from conservative voters turning their way - but I'm not sure if that's waht you are saying.

For those Liberal voters disaffected by support for the ETS - the Nationals may become their natural home. Although Warren Truss makes no song and dance, plenty of other National MPs made their dislike for the ETS plain in Parliamentary speeches 2 weeks ago.

Bob, I just think that the public brawling and disarray of the Libs will see many of its voters spraying off to parties both left and right
