Keating famously said that he could flick the switch to vaudeville when he needed to campaign, Abbott has also proved himself adept at the old soft shoe shuffle.
With just a few months to go to the election, Abbott needs to switch to ideas and content. Not too many ideas, political parties are great at issuing reams of dull policy papers and worthy 'headland' speeches. What Abbott needs is one or two areas where there is a genuine difference between him and the prime minister.
If he can't give people a fix on a core of political belief, and some distinctive policy ideas, he will be vulnerable to ALP attacks and he will leave voters with no incentive to get rid of Rudd and put him in the Lodge.
