Support from Indians has become so vital that Mr Rees has sought advice on how to speak Hindi. The former premier, dumped as leader by his colleagues in favour of Kristina Keneally in December, said he would often begin his speeches to local groups with Indian greetings such as namaste.
The strategy has echoes of 2006, when the federal Labor elder Simon Crean glad-handed Cambodian branch members to hold on to his Victorian seat of Hotham.
