Seth says: "Focus on P, not R" which is a very marketing thing to say. Cute but meaningless - makes you look though which I guess is the point. Godin also writes books with names like purple cow and free prize inside. Good attention grabbers.
He sells an awful lot of books. But most books today are made to be sold not read. Example: self-help books. What a world we'd live in if the people who bought these things actually read them. Instead, depression and obesity are the two great scourges of our time.
Godin also wrote a book called permission marketing - as if anyone would give permission to be marketed to. When it comes to marketing we're all pretty much in the 'don't call me I'll call you' category. Marketing is about grabbing the attention of people who are otherwise disinclined to listen.
PR it is. because its about relations with publics (or stakeholders as we call them now). That means listening as well as talking. Its all been said before.
P without R - doesn't make a truckload of sense to me.
Well said Trevor. In the world of public relations, listening is meaningless without associated action.
And you are right that it has all been said before. Really boring, honestly.

Is there a Seth Godin backlash brewing?
