I had the pleasure of sitting alongside the great and garrulous Australian author and republican, Thomas Keneally, at yesterday’s rugby league game at Brookvale Oval. Tom was loudly watching the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles – a team he follows with a monumental passion verging on obsession.
He shares this same fervour with Kerry Sibraa, Jackson Wells Morris' board member and patron of the Manly-Warringah club.
Yesterday, with the Sea Eagles flying on all feathers after many years of bottom of the table gloom, I was reminded of Tom’s New Season Ode to rugby league, written in 1999. An extract…..
"We go to the cupboard, we take out club colours
"And the air sings, the season's close
"Our boys are running up sandhills, their legs pump
"This season, this season, this is our season
"This year we all start equal."
And, given the way the team played yesterday, 2005 just might well be our season.
