Doing some spring cleaning the other day I found this story Download good_weekend_17.05.97.pdf (1.02 mb) about my family in a SOHO (small office home office) feature in the SMH in May !997. Fascinating because you forget just how far it has all come in just 8 years. Back then I talked about upgrading from 8mb to 16mb of ram and from a 14.4 kbps to a 28.8 kbps modem connection.
It also quotes me saying that we would probably have to get another computer at some stage because this one gets used so much. Well, indeed. Today we have broadband with a wireless router and lots of devices connecting through it.
BTW the 3 year old in the story who gave out a 'proprietorial screech' when someone tried to wrest the mouse from him is now well on the way to being a full-on geek. He is online many hours each day, he claims to be teaching himself html and he and his mates spend their time designinng websites and running an online radio program for a small group of devoted listeners. They also use Skype and itunes and so on.
At this rate of change, what will the home computer be like in 2013.
I expect the whole notion of a home computer will be redundant, we will be fully into personal, mobile always-on devices.
