Over the past five years it has become evident that litblogs provide a genuinely comfortable space for readers and writers to participate in literary criticism and share opinions about all kinds of writing. Their independent, sometimes unapologetically partisan (and unsalaried) owners enjoy doing this at a clear remove from established doyens of culture, but not so far away that they cannot relish or reply to any challenge they might raise from the much noisier, larger world of mainstream book critics, publicists and opinion-makers.
