The fairfax media today reports that Abbott intends to create a payment to help meet the costs of of "flexible, responsive in-home care". Nearly 20 years ago I was a beneficiary of a Keating Government program, which came into effect from 1 July 1994:
a nonincome-tested Child Care Cash Rebate has been available. The rebate is provided in respect of 30 per cent of childcare expenses for children up to 12 years of age (see p25)
Our nanny gave us receipts and we used these to collect our rebate at the Medicare office.
I don't recall the fate of this program.
Perhaps everything old is new again.
